We’re thankful that so many of you have faithfully given year after year to Loaves and Fishes week long residential summer camp for children of Summers County’s low-income families.
We’re need help to meet this year’s Youth Camp Fund Drive goal of $5,500 to make the camp a reality again this summer.
Your Help Is Needed! to provide a safe and supportive summer camp environment for local kids that might not otherwise go to summer camp. All children eligible for free/reduced lunches at school (about 95% of our campers) attend for free. The camp experience provides an opportunity for children to feel valued and appreciated by adults in the community, allows them to receive support from adults other than their parent or guardian, and helps them to establish lasting relationships with their counselor in order to increase their self-esteem and personal self-worth.
With the volunteer staff our cost per camper is only $125 per camper (remember it’s FREE for the camper). Comparable camps cost at least twice that amount. We think it’s a bargain in providing a child with this life affirming opportunity. Please be a part ofsomething big for these children, give generously to our 2014 Youth Camp Fund drive.
With the exception of our cooks and camp director, the camp is staffed entirely by volunteers. They include 35 teenage counselors, local Junior Counselors, 10-15 adults, our camp nurse and others who accompany the children each day. Our total budget is $13,000. $7,500 will come from 2 outside sources (WV Summer Food Program, and our good friends at Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Illinois). Area businesses donate many of our supplies. But even with this help we still need to raise $5,500 locally.
